Objects

A field guide to choosing objects that last

Repairable parts, honest materials and a shape you will still want to use next year.

Long-lasting objects are often straightforward. A handle can be tightened. A cover can be replaced. A surface becomes more interesting with use. These details matter more than the promise that something is timeless.

Look for the joints

Ask how an object is put together and what happens if one part wears out. Can the maker supply a replacement? Can a local repairer understand it? An object that invites care has a better chance of staying in your life.

Choose for ordinary days

Imagine using it on a busy Tuesday, not only in a beautifully arranged photograph. The best objects work quietly in the background while you get on with the day.
